Frequently asked questions.
Everything you need to know about Programate Lift, AI visibility, and how the tool works.
Understanding AI visibility
What does it mean for AI to recommend you unprompted?
When a persona asks an AI model a question the model will surface recommendations and your brand may or may not be in that set of recommendations. A Discovery run shows you if you are being recommended unprompted. Discovery probes ask your buyer’s questions without naming you, then measure if you are recommended. Note that a brand can appear in an answer without being recommended. When that happens, we score it as a fail, because appearing is not the same as being the brand AI puts forward. This matters because AI-driven discovery is now a primary channel in both B2B and B2C buying journeys. According to Forrester’s 2026 research, 94% of B2B buyers used generative AI during their buying process in 2025. On the consumer side, Accenture’s 2025 Consumer Pulse research found that 83% of active generative AI users rely on it when choosing a product or service. The brands that appear in AI answers are capturing high-intent buyers before those buyers ever reach a website.
What is the difference between being recommended by AI, GEO and AEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and being recommended by AI basically describe the same practice: ensuring your brand appears accurately and prominently in AI-generated answers. GEO and AEO are currently being used interchangeably, and depending on who you ask you may get a lecture on the correct terminology. Programate Lift is designed to show you how your brand shows up in AI models and how you can most effectively reach your personas when they are using those models to solve a problem.
What is the difference between Google search and Google AI Overviews?
Traditional Google search returns a list of links and the buyer chooses which to visit. Google AI Overviews sit above those links and synthesize an answer directly on the results page, often naming specific brands, tools, or services. The buyer frequently gets what they need without clicking anything. BrightEdge’s 2026 analysis found that Google AI Mode produces a 93% zero-click rate, meaning 93 out of 100 people who search in AI Mode never visit a website. When Google AI Overviews appear, click-through rates drop sharply: Ahrefs’ analysis of 300,000 keywords found organic click-through fell from 7.3% to 1.6%, and Seer Interactive’s study of 3,119 queries across 42 organizations found organic click-through fell 61%. Appearing in a ranked list of 10 links is no longer enough. Your brand needs to be in the synthesized answer itself.
How has buyer research behavior actually changed?
Buyers increasingly skip search altogether and take their question straight to an AI model. Instead of typing a phrase into Google, scanning links, and clicking through several sites to piece together an answer, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity and let the model do that research for them. The AI reads the sources, compares the options, and returns a recommendation. The research work a buyer used to do is now conducted by AI. According to Product.ai, 46% of AI users now start their purchase research on a stand-alone AI platform, up from 25% in 2024, while traditional search fell from 43% to 24% over the same period. For brands, this means the moment of influence has moved: it is no longer only about ranking in search results, it is about being present in the research the AI does on the buyer’s behalf.
Does ranking well on Google mean I appear in AI recommendations?
Not reliably. When you search on Google, you are searching for the one phrase you typed. When you ask an AI model, the AI goes off and runs many searches for you, sometimes more than a dozen, often using entirely different keywords than the ones you would have typed, before it comes back with a recommendation. So getting recommended by AI is not the same as ranking for your keywords: the AI may never search the specific terms you optimized. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode do draw heavily on Google’s existing ranking data, so strong organic rankings help with those surfaces. ChatGPT is a different story. Research from CiteLens found that ChatGPT sources roughly 30% of its citations from Google’s top-10 results, meaning about 70% of what ChatGPT recommends comes from sources that may have nothing to do with your organic ranking. ChatGPT holds over 76% of the AI chatbot market with more than 800 million weekly active users as of early 2026, according to SE Ranking and StatCounter Global Stats. Organic SEO and AI visibility require overlapping but distinct strategies.
How fast is this category growing?
Fast, and the growth is not slowing. According to Search Engine Land, referral traffic from AI engines to external websites grew 527% year over year between early 2024 and early 2025. ChatGPT alone grew from 400 million weekly active users in early 2025 to over 1 billion monthly active users by early 2026, according to Exposure Ninja, Cintra, and SE Ranking reporting. And yet, according to Incremys’ 2025 research, only 23% of marketers currently invest in GEO measurement, while eMarketer’s January 2026 data shows 54% of US marketers plan to implement it within 3 to 6 months.
What Programate Lift does
What is Programate Lift?
Programate Lift is more than a recommendation tool. It tells you whether your current website represents your brand to AI the way you intended. It tells you how your brand appears when someone asks AI about you directly. It tells you whether AI recommends you when buyers have open questions about your market or the problem you solve. And it gives you the exact fixes to improve all of these, in an easy-to-read, easy-to-use dashboard. It is built for marketing practitioners who need to act on what they find, not just report it.
What is a recommendation rate?
Your recommendation rate is how often AI recommends your brand when the right buyers ask. It is one of three things Programate Lift tracks. The first is alignment: it compares your setup, your library identity, categories, personas, and goals, against what an AI actually extracts from your live site, so you can see whether AI reads your site the way you intend. Anything AI cannot find on your site is invisible to every downstream check. The second is reputation: what AI says when buyers ask about you directly. The third is your recommendation rate: using the customer personas and questions you define, how often does your brand get put forward? In advanced mode you can measure this across the AI engines you choose. A rising recommendation rate means that the AI models are recommending you consistently when your personas are inquiring about a challenge they have or a problem they need to solve.
What are deciding sources?
Deciding sources are the external websites that AI engines consulted when forming a recommendation about your category. When an AI recommends a competitor over you, it is drawing on specific sources: review sites, publications, industry directories, forums, case studies, and other third-party content. Programate Lift identifies which sources tipped the answer. Knowing which sites influenced the recommendation tells you exactly where to get listed, what content to create, and where to build presence. This is the difference between knowing you have a problem and knowing what to do about it. No score without a source.
What does “the fix, not just the finding” mean?
Most AI visibility tools give you a score or a presence indicator. Programate Lift gives you the source behind the score and the specific pages to build to change it. The finding tells you whether your brand is being recommended. The fix is the deciding sources to appear on and the exact pages your site is missing. We built Programate Lift for marketing practitioners who do not have time to interpret a dashboard.
How is Programate Lift different from other AI visibility tools?
Programate Lift gives you the exact information you need to improve your website content so it conveys what you intend to AI models, to build your reputation in your competitive space, and to be surfaced when your personas ask about a problem your business solves. It is purposefully simple and pragmatic, built for high utility with limited effort: high value for your time and money, and a way to cut through all of the AI hype. Where many tools in this category are monitoring platforms that track a number over time, Programate Lift tells you what to do next. It also offers a true pay-as-you-go model with no contract, and a free report with no account required, so you can see the value before spending anything.
Which AI engines does Programate Lift cover?
Programate Lift covers the six AI engines that account for the large majority of AI-driven discovery: OpenAI ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity Sonar, and xAI Grok. A standard check runs against a primary engine. To run against all six engines, use advanced mode, where you can select exactly which engines to include. Engine access is not locked behind a higher plan tier.
How it works
What are customer personas and why do I need them?
Customer personas in Programate Lift describe the specific buyers you want AI to recommend. For each persona you capture who they are, what they care about, how they search, and the goal they are trying to accomplish. It helps to understand how AI reads and interprets content: an AI model does not think like a person. It works through logic and pattern, assembling an answer from what it can extract and infer, even though the response reads as if a human wrote it. Building an accurate persona means Programate Lift can simulate a realistic conversation with the AI on that buyer’s behalf. A vague or inaccurate persona produces a poorly simulated conversation and weaker results. The more accurate your personas, the better your results.
What is a Discovery check?
A Discovery check looks for unprompted mentions of your brand. It runs your customer personas against one or more AI engines, builds the buyer conversation, runs it through the engine, and measures whether your brand is recommended without being named, and how prominently. It surfaces the fan-out queries the engine explored on its way to an answer, and returns your page strategy and the deciding sources that influenced the recommendation. A check takes minutes. You can review results and begin acting on them the same day.
What is a Reputation check and what does it show?
A Reputation check looks at what AI says when someone names your brand directly. These are the questions a buyer asks once they already know you exist: can I trust them, what are their strengths and weaknesses, are they better than competitor X. Programate Lift helps you build a suite of reputation questions across that spectrum. You configure the questions, then run them using your defined customer personas against a range of AI models. For each scenario, Programate Lift measures what the AI models surface about your brand’s reputation.
What is an alignment check?
An alignment check answers the question: when AI reads your site, does it see who you say you are?
The alignment check compares your entire library profile, your identity, categories, personas, and goals, against what an AI actually extracts from your live site.
Alignment is not a check you write questions for and it does not use your Discovery or Reputation scores. We recommend starting here when possible, to ensure your site first reflects your perception of who you say and think you are. Getting this right first helps ensure that your efforts to improve reputation and recommendation rates are built on accurate messaging on your website.
What does an alignment check tell me?
An alignment check returns four categories of findings:
- Confirmed: Setup items in your library that AI is reading and your site confirms. These are what you expect AI to read, and AI is in fact reading them.
- Site-missing: In your setup but missing from your site. You claim these but AI cannot see them. This is the gap that hurts most.
- Set-up gaps: On your site but not yet in your setup. Things AI found on your site that you are not tracking yet.
- AI reflection: What AI repeats from your site. Brand values found on your site, and whether a Reputation check hears them back.
What happens during a run?
Programate Lift takes a customer persona and a question you define, constructs the conversation that persona would have with an AI engine, and runs that conversation. It captures whether your brand appears in the answer and where. It then surfaces the fan-out queries the AI generated on its way to a possible recommendation, so you can see what the engine surfaces about your business and your competitive set.
What pages does Programate Lift tell me to build and how does it know?
Programate Lift identifies the content gaps between what AI engines need to recommend your brand and what your site and off-site sources currently provide. It analyzes what the AI asked during the run and which sources it consulted. It also analyzes what information those sources contain, what information yours contains, and what information others contain that yours does not. The output is a specific list of pages: not a content strategy concept, but actual pages with a clear rationale for why each one would improve your recommendation rate. The pages are based on evidence from the run, not generic best practice.
How do deciding sources connect to what I build?
Deciding sources tell you where the authority lives for a specific line of inquiry. It depends on the question, not just your brand or category. If you sell jackets and shoes and you test “who makes the best jackets in Chicago,” one set of sources may be authoritative; test “best shoes in Chicago” and entirely different sites may carry the authority. For each question, Programate Lift shows you which sources the AI treated as authoritative. Some of those sources are external: review sites, publications, directories, forums. Some may be your own website. Where a source is within your control, updating your own site can make a dramatic difference. Where it is external, you work to get listed, reviewed, or included. Your page strategy and your deciding-source strategy work together to shift the recommendation.
What is Act?
Act is a planning tool available on Pro and Scale. It gathers everything Programate Lift recommends, your page strategy and your deciding sources, into one place you can work through and track. You get a prioritized, manageable view of the content and site changes to make, both on and off your website, to improve how AI models view your website in the context of your competitors. It is the difference between knowing what to build and having a plan you can execute against.
Getting started
Do I need an account to try Programate Lift?
No. You can run a free discoverability report with no account, no credit card, and no obligation. Review three generated Discovery questions, then run a standard Discovery check. Your report shows your business profile and whether AI recommends you in the answers tested. You can email the results to yourself or save the Discovery check to your account.
What are credits and how does credit consumption work?
Credits are how you pay for things in Programate Lift. 100 credits cost $1. A complete Discovery check consumes credits based on which AI engine was used, how many conversation steps the persona takes to reach an answer, and how many questions are tested. A basic Discovery check costs less than an advanced one that runs across multiple engines. Credits are also used for other actions across Programate Lift, not only Discovery checks. You buy credits in any amount above the $10 minimum on Pay As You Go, or receive a monthly allocation on Pro and Scale. Credits you buy outright last one year. Subscription credits last the current month and roll over for one additional month.
What is a workspace?
A workspace is a dedicated environment for a single brand, client, or project. It holds the customer personas, run history, library, and results for that brand. Pay As You Go includes one workspace. Pro includes five workspaces, designed for lean teams managing a small number of brands or projects. Scale includes 25 workspaces, built for agencies managing an entire client portfolio.
Is there a contract or minimum commitment?
No. Pay As You Go has no monthly fee and no contract. You buy credits when you need them and run checks when it makes sense. Pro and Scale are subscriptions you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel. Annual billing is available on both plans at the equivalent of two months free. There is no lock-in at any level.
For agencies and lean teams
Can I manage multiple clients or brands from one account?
Yes. The Scale plan includes 25 workspaces, which means you can run AI model visibility optimization across your entire client portfolio from a single account. Each workspace holds its own personas, run history, and results, so client data stays separate. You can run the same check across multiple clients to benchmark category visibility, or build client-specific personas tailored to their specific buyers and questions.
Can I give my team different levels of access?
Yes. Team management is available on Pro and Scale. There is a limit on total team size, up to 5 people on Pro and up to 15 on Scale, but no restriction on which roles you assign within that limit. There are three roles. Admin has full access including billing, plan, and team management. Manager runs checks and spends credits but cannot touch billing, plan, or team. Viewer can see everything but cannot run checks or spend credits. There is no cap on the number of Admins, though we recommend one Admin per budget allocation to keep costs and priorities aligned to your business goals.
How do I use Programate Lift in a client pitch or review?
Pro and Scale include reports you can use for prospecting: three per workspace each month on Pro (15 a month across five workspaces), five per workspace each month on Scale (125 a month across 25 workspaces). Set a prospect’s brand up as a workspace and run one before the conversation. The results show exactly where their brand stands in the AI engines their buyers use, which competitors are being recommended in their place, and which deciding sources are driving those recommendations. You arrive at the pitch with evidence, not a proposal. Clients who see their own recommendation rate and the specific sources they are missing understand the problem immediately.
Is this tool right for a lean or fractional marketing team?
Yes. Programate Lift was built specifically for teams that need specific, actionable intelligence without enterprise overhead. Pay As You Go means you pay only for the runs you execute, with no monthly retainer before you see a result. The outputs are specific and actionable, which matters when a lean team or fractional CMO needs to show clear direction without a large team to interpret findings.
Pricing
What does Programate Lift cost?
There are three options. Pay As You Go has no monthly fee: buy credits as you need them at $1 per 100 credits, $10 minimum per refill, one workspace included. Pro is $49 per month and includes five workspaces, 5,250 credits per month, a 5% bonus on every refill, and three parallel runs. Scale is $199 per month and includes 25 workspaces, 22,000 credits per month, a 10% refill bonus, six parallel runs, and priority throughput. Annual billing on Pro and Scale gives you 12 months for the price of 10.
When does it make sense to upgrade from Pay As You Go to Pro or Scale?
Pay As You Go works well for occasional checks, single-brand practitioners, and teams still establishing a cadence. Upgrading to Pro makes sense when you are running Discovery checks regularly for one to five brands and find that the monthly credit allocation is more economical than buying credits individually. Scale makes sense for agencies or teams managing multiple clients who need separate workspaces, higher credit volume, and the ability to run checks in parallel across a portfolio.
What is included in the free report?
The free report is a Discovery check, offered with no account and no credit card. It generates three buyer questions using your business profile and target customers, then runs a standard Discovery check. See which questions and models were tested, whether your business was recommended, and the available evidence and next steps. Email the results to yourself or save the Discovery check and its setup to your account without running it again.
What are shareable reports?
Shareable reports are available on Pro and Scale. A report is a snapshot of where AI stands on a brand, Alignment, Reputation, and Discovery in one document, that you can hand to a client, prospect, or stakeholder in PDF, Word, or Markdown. The Markdown format is machine-readable: you can feed a report directly into an agentic system to act on the findings, with no human re-keying the data. Pro includes three reports per workspace each month (15 across five workspaces); Scale includes five per workspace each month (125 across 25).
